Why you can never put one into the other's system
An R-22 system's compressor, piping and safety components are rated for R-22 pressures and run on mineral oil. R-410A operates at far higher pressure and requires POE oil; charging it into an R-22 circuit over-pressurises components and starves lubrication. The reverse swap fails too — R-22 in a 410A machine runs the wrong pressures and chemistry for its design. There is no legitimate "drop-in" between these two.
How to identify what your system takes
- Nameplate first. The outdoor unit or plant nameplate states the designed refrigerant (look for R22 / R410A).
- Service valves and gauges. Technicians will recognise 410A's high-pressure service fittings and gauge ranges.
- Age as a hint, not proof. Indian residential splits shifted to R-410A and then R-32 through the 2010s; equipment designed after the HCFC manufacturing cut-off (1 January 2025) cannot be R-22.
Servicing each, legally and well
R-22 systems: keep them leak-tight, service with genuine gas from a registered seller, and plan replacement on your own schedule — the law restricts supply, not use. R-410A systems: supply is unrestricted today; use manufacturer-sourced gas and the correct POE practices. We stock both — R-22 (licensed) and R-410A.

Can I top up an R-22 system with R-410A?
