Refrigerant Basics: A Beginner's Guide

What is a refrigerant?

A refrigerant is a working fluid that carries heat from one place to another by evaporating and condensing in a closed loop. In an air conditioner or fridge it absorbs heat indoors (turning to vapour) and releases it outdoors (turning back to liquid) — that cycle is what makes cooling possible.

What is refrigerant gas, and is it different from coolant or Freon?

"Refrigerant gas" is the same thing as a refrigerant — people say "gas" because it spends part of its cycle as vapour. "Freon" is an old brand name (DuPont's) now used loosely for any refrigerant; "coolant" usually means engine antifreeze, which is different. In HVAC, refrigerant is the correct term.

How does a refrigerant actually cool something?

It uses a four-step cycle: a compressor pressurises the vapour; a condenser lets it release heat outdoors and become liquid; an expansion valve drops its pressure; then an evaporator lets it absorb heat indoors and become vapour again. Heat always moves from inside to outside — the refrigerant is just the carrier.

What do the "R" and the numbers mean (R-22, R-32, R-410A)?

The "R" stands for refrigerant. The number is an ASHRAE code describing the molecule's chemistry — how many carbon, hydrogen and fluorine atoms it has. A trailing letter (like the "A" in R-410A) marks a specific blend. So the number isn't random: it identifies exactly which chemical the cylinder holds.

Why are there so many different refrigerants?

Different jobs need different properties — pressure, temperature range, efficiency, flammability — and the rules have tightened over time. Ozone-depleting gases (CFCs, then HCFCs like R-22) were phased out, and high-warming HFCs are now being phased down, so newer, cleaner refrigerants keep arriving to replace older ones.

Does refrigerant get used up — why does my AC need a "top-up"?

No. Refrigerant isn't consumed like fuel; it circulates in a sealed loop indefinitely. If a system is low, it has a leak — and the right fix is to find and repair the leak, then recharge, not just keep topping it up. Repeated top-ups without repair waste gas and money and can damage the compressor.

How do I know which refrigerant my equipment uses?

Check the nameplate — the metal or sticker label on the outdoor unit, compressor or fridge — which states the refrigerant type and charge amount. Never guess: putting the wrong gas in a system (they run at different pressures with different oils) can wreck the compressor.

Can I just top up my system with a different refrigerant?

No — never mix refrigerants. Different gases have different pressures and require different oils, so mixing gives false readings, poor cooling and can destroy the compressor. If a system was cross-charged, it must be fully recovered, evacuated and recharged with the correct gas.

What's the difference between the refrigerant and the compressor oil?

They're two separate fluids that circulate together. The refrigerant carries heat; the oil lubricates the compressor. They must be matched — R-22 uses mineral oil, while HFCs (R-32, R-410A, R-134a, R-404A) need synthetic POE oil, because mineral oil won't return to the compressor in an HFC system.

Is refrigerant dangerous to handle?

Handled correctly, common refrigerants (R-22, R-410A, R-134a, R-404A) are non-flammable and low-toxicity, but they can cause frostbite, displace oxygen in a closed space, and release toxic gases if exposed to a flame. R-32 is mildly flammable (A2L). Charging and recovery should be done by a trained technician with proper gear.

What happens if refrigerant leaks — is it harmful?

A leak means lost cooling and wasted gas, and it has wider costs: older refrigerants harm the ozone layer, and most harm the climate (high global-warming potential). In a confined space a large leak can displace oxygen. That's why leaks should be repaired, and recovered gas handled properly, not vented.

Can I buy refrigerant as an individual, or only as a technician?

In India, refrigerants are compressed gases and — for R-22 — a controlled ozone-depleting substance. Sellers must be registered, and buyers of R-22 for regulated uses sign a declaration. In practice, gas is sold to the trade (technicians, contractors, businesses). Charging a system also needs proper equipment and skill.

How is refrigerant sold and measured?

By weight (kilograms), in sealed cylinders and cans. It comes in disposable (non-refillable) cans and cylinders, refillable trade cylinders, and large bulk containers for industry. Non-refillable cylinders must never be refilled. A system's required charge (in kg) is set by the manufacturer.

Four key parts: the compressor (pumps and pressurises the refrigerant), the condenser coil (releases heat outside), the expansion device (drops the pressure), and the evaporator coil (absorbs heat inside). The refrigerant loops through all four continuously while the appliance runs.

Why does genuine, branded refrigerant matter?

Because counterfeit and contaminated refrigerant is a real problem — fake gas can contain the wrong chemicals, damage compressors and even cause explosions. Genuine, branded product from a registered seller, with a proper invoice and Safety Data Sheet, is your protection. It costs a little more and saves a lot.

What does "phase-out" versus "phase-down" mean?

Phase-out means eliminating a substance entirely because it harms the ozone layer — that's CFCs and HCFCs like R-22. Phase-down means gradually reducing supply, not banning it, because a substance harms the climate — that's the HFCs (R-32, R-410A, R-134a, R-404A) under the Kigali Amendment. The distinction matters: HFCs remain legal.

Do new appliances and electric vehicles use different refrigerants?

Yes — the trend is toward lower-warming gases. New Indian split ACs mostly use R-32; cars have moved from R-12 to R-134a and, globally, toward R-1234yf (an ultra-low-warming HFO). Choice depends on the equipment, safety class and current regulations.
