What is the difference between CFC, HCFC, HFC and HFO refrigerants?

CFCs (chlorine + fluorine + carbon) destroy ozone aggressively and are banned. HCFCs like R-22 add hydrogen — shorter atmospheric life, lower ODP (0.055), but still ozone-depleting and phasing out. HFCs like R-32 and R-134a contain no chlorine — zero ODP but high GWP, so they are phasing down. HFOs like R-1234yf add a carbon double bond for very low GWP.

One molecule, four design generations

Every generation fixed its predecessor's headline problem. CFCs were the miracle fluids of the 1930s — stable, non-toxic, non-flammable — and their stability was the flaw: they survive to the stratosphere, where UV strips chlorine that shreds ozone (ODP = 1.0 for CFC-11). HCFCs added a hydrogen atom so tropospheric chemistry destroys most molecules early — R-22's ODP falls to 0.055 — a transitional fix, not a cure. HFCs deleted chlorine entirely: zero ODP, but century-scale lifetimes and GWPs in the thousands. HFOs add an unsaturated carbon double bond that breaks down in days, driving GWP to single digits.

Where the market actually is

India in 2026 is an HCFC-exit, HFC-mainstream market: R-22 is servicing-only; R-32 dominates new residential AC; R-410A carries the 2006–2024 installed base; R-134a runs automotive and appliance refrigeration; R-404A holds legacy cold chain. HFOs appear mainly through global vehicle platforms (R-1234yf) and in low-GWP blends — a direction, not yet a mainstream Indian supply item. Why the taxonomy is worth knowing

Read a refrigerant's family and you can predict its paperwork: HCFC → ODS registration, quotas, declining availability; HFC → freely supplied now, CO₂e-capped after 2028; HFO → no ODS controls, premium pricing. It is the fastest sanity check in procurement — and the reason "is this gas banned?" is never answerable without first asking which family. Reading a refrigerant number like a chemist

The R-numbering system encodes the family if you know the cipher. For the common fluids, add 90 to the number and read the digits as carbon-hydrogen-fluorine: R-22 → 22+90 = 112 → 1 carbon, 1 hydrogen, 2 fluorines — the remaining bond is chlorine, marking it an HCFC. R-32 → 122 → 1 carbon, 2 hydrogens, 2 fluorines — no chlorine left, an HFC. R-12 → 102 → 1 carbon, 0 hydrogen, 2 fluorines — two chlorines, a fully halogenated CFC. The letter suffixes distinguish isomers (R-134a is the 'a' arrangement of C₂H₂F₄), the 400/500-series numbers mark zeotropic and azeotropic blends rather than pure fluids (behaviour in the blends guide), and the 1200-series unsaturation in R-1234yf is the double bond that makes it an HFO with days-long atmospheric life. The cipher has practical uses beyond trivia: it lets you sanity-check a label ('R-22' claiming to be chlorine-free is self-contradictory), predict paperwork (a 4xx blend of HFCs carries Kigali exposure, never ODS registration), and decode unfamiliar fluids on imported equipment nameplates without waiting for a datasheet. It is also a compact fraud filter — counterfeiters copy liveries convincingly but routinely mangle designation details, and a buyer who can read the number spots the mangle.
