Why can't you use mineral oil with R-410A or other HFCs?

Mineral oil is not miscible with HFC refrigerants, so oil carried into the circuit never returns to the compressor — causing oil starvation and compressor damage. HFCs (R-134a, R-404A, R-407C, R-410A) require synthetic POE (polyol ester) oil. Mineral oil remains correct only for R-22 (HCFC), the old CFCs, ammonia and hydrocarbons.

Miscibility: the whole story in one word

Compressor oil does not stay in the compressor — a fraction always travels with the discharge gas around the circuit. The system's survival depends on that oil dissolving in the refrigerant so the flowing gas drags it home. R-22 and mineral oil are mutually soluble; the pairing ran for seventy years. HFCs are more polar molecules, and non-polar mineral oil simply refuses to dissolve in them — it separates, wets out on cold evaporator walls, pools in low pipework, and the compressor slowly runs dry. Polyol-ester (POE) chemistry was engineered precisely to be miscible with HFCs across the operating envelope.

POE's one vice: it is hygroscopic — it pulls moisture from air far faster than mineral oil, and wet POE hydrolyses into acids. Hence the field rituals: containers opened at the last moment, systems evacuated properly, driers changed at every intervention.

The retrofit consequence

Oil is why R-22 retrofits are an oil decision as much as a gas decision. Move to R-407C and the mineral charge must be flushed to a low residual before POE goes in — typically multiple flush cycles. The blends engineered to skip that labour, R-438A/MO99 and R-427A, tolerate existing mineral or AB oil and exist for exactly this reason; the trade-offs sit in the retrofit guide. Whatever the path, relabel the system with both gas and oil — the next technician diagnoses blind otherwise.

Failure signature and the buyer's angle

Oil-return failure is slow and misdiagnosed: capacity drifts down as oil-logged evaporators lose surface, then the compressor fails "electrically" from worn bearings months later. Procurement-side, the rule is simplicity itself: buy the oil the nameplate names, in sealed containers, alongside the gas — we stock the allied consumables with the refrigerant lines so a service call carries one consistent bill of materials.

POE's second personality: moisture, acids and the drier ritual

Miscibility is why POE exists; hygroscopicity is why it demands respect. Ester oils absorb atmospheric moisture rapidly — orders of magnitude faster than mineral oil — and once absorbed, the water is not merely a contaminant but a reagent: at compressor temperatures, water plus ester runs hydrolysis, regenerating acids and alcohols. The acids attack motor windings and copper surfaces; copper re-plates onto hot steel parts; sludge follows; the end state is the burnout that gets blamed on the compressor rather than the chemistry. The defensive ritual, each step earning its place: containers — buy POE in sealed metal, open at the moment of use, never decant into 'handy' plastic that breathes, discard generously rather than store opened stock; systems — evacuate deep and verify with a micron gauge rather than a wristwatch, because evacuation is the moisture removal step; driers — replace the filter-drier at every intervention without debate, it is the in-circuit moisture police and it saturates silently; verification — on larger or suspect plant, a moisture-indicating sight glass or an oil test tells you where the chemistry stands. The AHRI 700 water limit of 10 ppm on the gas side (the limits) is this same chemistry expressed as a purchase specification — the gas arrives dry so the oil's appetite has nothing to feed on. Systems that get both halves right run decades; systems that get either wrong write the failure into the oil first and the invoice later.
