Why do R-410A and R-32 run at higher pressures than R-22?

R-410A operates at roughly 50–60% higher pressure than R-22. On a 95°F (35°C) day, an R-22 system runs about 65–75 psig suction / 240–280 psig discharge, while R-410A runs about 125–145 psig suction / 350–410 psig discharge; R-32 runs similar to or slightly above R-410A. R-22-rated components and gauges are not built for these pressures — which is why retrofits require component replacement, never a simple gas swap.

Why the newer fluids run hotter gauges

Pressure at a given temperature is a fixed property of the fluid — its saturation curve. R-410A and R-32 have higher vapour pressures and volumetric capacities than R-22: more refrigeration effect per swept volume, which let designers shrink compressors and coils for the same duty. The bill for that compactness is pressure. Everything in an R-410A/R-32 system — compressor shell, heat-exchanger tubing, service valves, even the hoses and manifold — is specified for the higher regime. R-32 adds one more wrinkle: elevated discharge temperature, which its equipment manages by design.

The interchangeability rule this creates

Higher design pressure is why "put R-410A in the old R-22 unit" is not a retrofit but a burst-pressure experiment. R-22 gauge sets under-range and over-pressure on R-410A; R-22-era recovery machines and cylinders are similarly out of spec. What it means day to day

For the trade: dual-rated (or separate) manifolds, R-410A/R-32-rated hoses and recovery gear, and PT-chart discipline per fluid — with dew/bubble-point care on blends (glide guide). For buyers: pressure class is one more reason equipment nameplate dictates the gas, and one more authenticity stake — an A1-labelled cylinder actually containing a hydrocarbon behaves on the gauges like nothing on any chart (counterfeit checks).

What higher pressure means for tools, testing and habits

The 50–60% pressure step changed the toolbag more than any transition before it, and the equipment list is where theory meets purchase orders. Gauges and hoses: R-410A/R-32 manifolds are built and scaled for the higher regime — an R-22-era set connected to a 400-psig discharge is both unreadable and unsafe; hoses carry higher working-pressure ratings for the same reason. Recovery plant and cylinders: recovery machines and recovery cylinders are pressure-rated components; R-22-generation units are out of specification for the newer fluids, which is one of the quiet ways old equipment enforces its own retirement. Nitrogen practice: pressure-testing and brazing purges follow system design pressure, so test pressures on R-410A/R-32 work run correspondingly higher — regulator settings and habits calibrated on R-22 undershoot the verification the newer systems need. Compressor behaviour: R-32's elevated discharge temperature adds a thermal wrinkle its equipment manages by design (injection, optimised compression), but it is why 'runs a bit hot' is normal on R-32 where the same reading on R-22 signalled trouble — charts, not memory, per fluid. The economic footnote: this tooling boundary is also a fraud filter, because a 'service provider' running one ancient gauge set across all three generations is telling you their standards predate the fleet they claim to service — the same signal-reading logic as the authenticity checks.
