Can you mix refrigerants or top up with a different refrigerant?

No — never. Mixing refrigerants creates an unspecified blend with wrong pressure-temperature behaviour, makes superheat and subcooling impossible to calculate, and can cause compressor failure. Retrofit blends must never "top off" an R-22 charge: the existing refrigerant must be fully recovered before any different gas goes in.

What actually goes wrong

Every service diagnostic hangs on one assumption: the gas in the system matches a known pressure-temperature chart. Add a second refrigerant and that chart no longer exists — the mixture has its own unknown PT curve, so gauge readings translate to nothing, superheat and subcool numbers become fiction, and the technician is flying instruments that lie. Meanwhile the components suffer real effects: composition-shifted pressures off design, possible oil-compatibility conflict, and capacity drift. The industry's technical press has been blunt for decades that cross-contaminated systems are diagnostic dead ends.

Why "just a top-up" is the classic failure

The tempting shortcut — low R-22 charge, a cylinder of R-407C on the van — is exactly the one manufacturer bulletins prohibit. Retrofit fluids are engineered to replace R-22 after full recovery, never to blend with it: partially mixed charges fractionate, hide leaks behind confused readings, and void the predictable behaviour that made the retrofit blend safe. The reclamation line deserves emphasis: recovered single-refrigerant charges have salvage value; mixed charges generally do not, because AHRI 700 purity cannot be economically restored from a mongrel blend.

The professional standard

Identify before you connect — nameplate, service labels, and if history is doubtful, a refrigerant identifier. One recovery machine discipline per gas family, dedicated hoses where practical, and relabel after any retrofit. And source matters: factory-sealed, branded cylinders from registered sellers are the guarantee that what goes in is what the label says — the same authenticity chain covered in genuine vs counterfeit.

What to do when a system is already contaminated

The prohibition page owes an answer to the technician who inherits the crime: gauges that match no chart, a service history full of question marks. The professional sequence: (1) Stop adding anything. Every further kilogram into an unknown mixture is money into a charge that is already waste. (2) Identify. A field refrigerant identifier at the service port reads composition; readings that match no single fluid or flag hydrocarbon content confirm contamination — and hydrocarbon flags change safety posture immediately (treat as flammable until proven otherwise; see the A1 trap). (3) Recover into a dedicated, labelled cylinder — never into stock recovery cylinders, or the contamination propagates to the next job; mark it as mixed waste. (4) Dispose through the regulated lane: mixed refrigerant generally cannot be economically restored to AHRI 700 purity, making it destruction-grade material for Form 14-registered reclaimers/destroyers (how that lane works), not something to vent or resell. (5) Evacuate, replace the drier, recharge with virgin gas per nameplate, relabel and document. The economics are instructive: steps 1–5 typically cost several times the price of the gas that was 'saved' by the original wrong top-up — which is the strongest version of this page's argument, written in invoice form.
