How should refrigerant cylinders be stored safely?
Why storage rules exist: pressure follows temperature
A refrigerant cylinder holds liquefied gas whose pressure tracks ambient temperature on the fluid's saturation curve — warm the cylinder and pressure climbs steeply, which is the entire logic of the rules: keep temperature down (shade, ventilation, distance from heat), keep integrity up (no impacts, no corrosion traps, valves protected), and keep any release from finding people or ignition (ventilation, segregation). The marked temperature limit on the cylinder is a legal line, not advice.

The habits that prevent most incidents
Godown incidents trace to a short list: cylinders stored against a sun-facing metal wall; full and empty stock mixed so handling doubles; valve caps missing; and "temporary" floor-standing rows that stay for months. The counters are equally short — shade and stand-off from hot surfaces, first-in-first-out racks with full/empty separation, caps on everything, and a monthly walk-through with a leak detector. None of it is capital-intensive; all of it is what an inspector looks for.
Empties, and where the duty transfers
"Empty" cylinders retain vapour pressure — they follow the same rules until returned. Non-refillables must never be refilled and should go to authorised disposal, not scrap dealers with cutting torches (see why flame + refrigerant is dangerous). And storage compliance starts upstream: a supplier may only deliver to licensed or exempt holders, so expect a good distributor to ask how you store — we do, and our own arrangements are documented on the compliance page.
Designing a small refrigerant godown that passes inspection
For the dealer or contractor setting up storage from scratch, the compliant layout is largely common sense arranged deliberately. Structure: fire-resistant construction, ventilation openings low as well as high (refrigerant vapour is heavier than air and pools at floor level), and no direct sun on storage walls — in Indian summers a west-facing metal wall functions as a heater aimed at your stock. Layout: racked rows with chains or bars, valve caps universal, full and empty stock separated and signed, flammable-class cylinders (A2L R-32) grouped with the red-band marking visible and ignition sources excluded from that zone. Flow: first-in-first-out racking so test-due dates don't ambush you, a marked handling aisle wide enough for a trolley (dropping happens where people improvise carries), and the delivery area arranged so cylinders are never rolled across thresholds. Paper and people: the Form F licence displayed if quantities require it (thresholds), SDS binder at the entrance, a monthly walk-through with a leak detector logged in a register, and every handler shown the three prohibitions — no dropping, no rolling, no repainting — on day one. An inspector's visit then becomes a tour rather than an interrogation, and the same features that satisfy the rules are the ones that protect the stock's value: refrigerant kept cool, secured and traceable is refrigerant that sells at full price with its documentation intact.
