Does your AC actually need gas?
Check these first, they cost nothing
The indoor filter. Pull it out and look at it. If light does not pass through, it is blocking airflow, and restricted airflow feels exactly like weak cooling. Wash it and let it dry fully. This is the single most common cause and it is free to fix.
The outdoor unit. It rejects heat, so it needs air. Check nothing is stacked against it, that the fins are not choked with dust and leaves, and that the fan is actually turning. An outdoor unit boxed into a tight balcony recirculates its own hot air and cannot work properly.
The obvious ones. Windows and doors open, a room that has grown a new heat source, or a unit that was always undersized for the space. An air conditioner sized for a bedroom will not cool a room that now has a computer and three people in it.
What a genuine refrigerant leak looks like
Ice on the pipework. Frost or ice forming on the thin copper pipe at the outdoor unit, or on the indoor coil, is a classic low-charge symptom. It can also be caused by restricted airflow, so it narrows things down rather than proving it.
Gradual decline over weeks or months. A leak is usually slow. Cooling that faded across a season fits a leak. Cooling that stopped suddenly and completely usually points at something electrical.
An oily patch. Refrigerant carries a little compressor oil with it. A persistent oily film around a pipe joint or a service valve is often where the gas is escaping, because the oil stays behind when the gas evaporates.
A hissing sound from the indoor unit or the pipework when the system is off.
It needed gas before. If the unit was topped up last year and is weak again, that is not a coincidence. It is the same unrepaired leak.
What it is not
Age. Refrigerant does not wear out, degrade or evaporate through the pipe walls. A ten-year-old sealed system that has never leaked has exactly the charge it left the factory with.
Normal use. Running the unit hard does not consume gas. The compressor works harder, the electricity bill goes up, and the amount of refrigerant stays the same.
A service interval. There is no maintenance schedule anywhere that calls for routine gas replacement, because there is no mechanism by which a sealed circuit loses gas without a leak.
Why adding gas to a full system makes it worse
Overcharging is a real fault with real consequences. Too much refrigerant raises pressure on the high side, floods part of the condenser with liquid so it stops rejecting heat efficiently, and can allow liquid back to the compressor, which is designed to compress gas and not liquid.
The result is worse cooling, higher running cost, and shortened compressor life. So "just put a little more in to be safe" is not a safe instruction. The correct charge is a specific weight printed on the machine.
What to do next
If the filter and outdoor unit are clean and the symptoms above fit, you probably do have a leak, and the right job is find, repair, then recharge by weight. That is covered on what a gas refill actually involves.

How do I know if my AC is low on gas?
Look for ice on the pipework, a gradual decline in cooling over weeks, an oily patch at a pipe joint, or a history of needing gas before. Check the filter and outdoor unit first.
Does AC gas reduce over time by itself?
No. The circuit is sealed and refrigerant does not degrade or evaporate through the pipes. A system that is low has a leak.
Can too much gas damage an air conditioner?
Yes. Overcharging raises high-side pressure, floods part of the condenser and can return liquid to the compressor, which shortens its life and worsens cooling.
My AC cools less than last year. Is it the gas?
Usually not. Start with the filter and the outdoor coil, both of which restrict airflow as they get dirty and produce the same symptom.
