What is the AHRI 700 standard and why does it matter?

AHRI Standard 700 specifies acceptable contaminant levels — purity requirements — for fluorocarbon, hydrocarbon and CO₂ refrigerants regardless of source (new, reclaimed or repackaged), plus the analytical test methods to verify them. It is the global benchmark for refrigerant quality: gas conforming to AHRI 700 protects compressors, oil and system performance.

What the standard actually is

Published by the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute, Standard 700 answers one question per fluid: how clean must this refrigerant be to be sold as that refrigerant? It tabulates limits for the contaminants that damage systems — moisture, air and other non-condensables, acidity, high-boiling residue, particulates, chlorides, and other volatile impurities — and pairs each with a laboratory method (largely gas chromatography and Karl Fischer titration) so any competent lab reaches comparable verdicts. Two design choices give it teeth: it is source-blind (virgin, reclaimed and repackaged product all face the same table — the backbone of legitimate reclamation, see reclamation in India), and it is referenced into regulation, notably 40 CFR Part 82 in the US.

Why purity is a mechanical issue, not a cosmetic one

Each limited contaminant maps to a failure mode. Moisture freezes at expansion devices and, with POE oil, hydrolyses into acids (the chemistry behind the oil guide's drier ritual). Non-condensables squat in the condenser, raising head pressure and power draw. Acidity attacks windings and copper. Residues coat heat-transfer surfaces and clog capillaries. How the standard is used in trade

"AHRI 700" on a certificate of analysis is shorthand every serious buyer understands: this batch was tested to the industry's reference table. Reclaimers must hit it before resale; manufacturers publish against it; procurement specifications cite it. One honest boundary from our side: we are a distributor, not a laboratory — we supply factory-sealed branded product whose manufacturers publish conformity, and batch documentation where applicable, rather than claiming test results of our own (documentation set in what a supplier provides).

The buyer's use of it

Ask where the gas comes from and what the brand states against AHRI 700; reconcile cylinder, label, SDS and invoice; and treat purity claims without a named brand behind them as noise. The standard is also your counterfeit yardstick — the signature adulterants of fake refrigerant, led by R-40, sit explicitly outside its limits (why that matters).

The standard's quiet superpower: making reclaimed gas tradeable

AHRI 700's most consequential design choice hides in one phrase: regardless of source. By writing purity limits that apply identically to virgin, reclaimed and repackaged refrigerant, the standard created something markets otherwise struggle to produce — fungibility. A kilogram of reclaimed R-410A certified to 700 is, by specification, the same article as a kilogram from a new production run; no asterisk, no second-class grade. That single equivalence underwrites the entire lifecycle economy the phase-downs depend on: reclaimers can invest in distillation and lab capacity because certified output commands virgin-equivalent prices; equipment owners can accept reclaimed gas without warranty anxiety; and regulators can count recovered material against servicing demand — the arithmetic that makes India's R-22 servicing tail and Form 14 reclamation framework (details) function as supply policy rather than aspiration. The equivalence also disciplines the grey market from the other direction: 'reclaimed' gas offered without 700 certification is, by the standard's own logic, just used refrigerant of unknown quality — recycling at best, adulteration risk at worst — which gives buyers a one-question filter that requires no chemistry: certified to AHRI 700 by whom, with what analysis? A named laboratory and a batch analysis is an answer; anything else is a price explanation. The standard, in other words, does not merely describe clean gas — it defines the boundary of the legitimate market.
