Why is fake or contaminated refrigerant dangerous?

Counterfeit refrigerants often contain R-40 (methyl chloride), which reacts with aluminium components to form trimethyl aluminium — spontaneously flammable in air — the mechanism implicated in fatal refrigerated-container explosions. As little as 2% of the wrong chemical can cause compressor failure; contaminants also cut efficiency and raise running costs.

The R-40 mechanism, step by step

Methyl chloride is the counterfeiter's diluent of choice — cheap, and superficially compatible in a blend. Inside a system it finds aluminium: compressor internals, heat-exchanger surfaces, brazing alloys. The reaction product, trimethyl aluminium (TMA), is pyrophoric — it ignites on contact with air. A circuit quietly accumulating TMA is a device awaiting an opening: a service connection, a leak, a recovery operation. The International Institute of Refrigeration and industry investigators documented exactly this chain in the refrigerated-container explosions of the early 2010s, which killed service personnel across multiple ports — the case that made R-40 the industry's signature counterfeit marker and put the 300 ppm cap into AHRI 700.

Who carries the loss

Everyone downstream of the sale. The technician faces the acute hazard — TMA and disguised flammables meet people at service time. The owner eats the chronic one: efficiency losses compounding into power bills, then a compressor claim the OEM warranty rightly rejects once analysis shows off-spec gas. The "saving" on a suspect cylinder is routinely two orders of magnitude smaller than the failure it seeds.

The 2011–2012 reefer crisis: the case study the industry never forgot

The abstract danger acquired names and dates in late 2011, when refrigerated shipping containers began exploding during routine service — fatally, at ports in Vietnam and Brazil among others — with incidents severe enough that major shipping lines quarantined thousands of reefer units worldwide pending inspection. The forensic chain, reconstructed by industry investigators and the International Institute of Refrigeration, ran exactly along the mechanism this page describes: units serviced in ports where counterfeit 'R-134a' circulated had taken on gas cut with R-40; the methyl chloride reacted with aluminium in the circuits to form trimethyl aluminium; and the pyrophoric compound ignited when service work opened the system to air. The episode rewired industry practice in ways still visible: shipping lines instituted refrigerant testing and approved-supplier regimes for port servicing; manufacturers accelerated brand-authentication programmes; field refrigerant identifiers went from curiosity to standard kit in fleet operations; and the R-40 screening that anchors the AHRI 700 limits gained its 300 ppm bright line an industry could test against. The Indian relevance is direct rather than historical: the same economic conditions that produced that wave — price pressure on R-134a, fragmented service markets, one-way packaging — are present here (sharpened by the 2025 duty), and the defence that worked globally is the one this site keeps repeating: sealed branded product, documented chain, registered sellers, and suspicion calibrated to price.
