Which refrigerant does automotive air conditioning use?

Automotive AC in India predominantly uses R-134a (HFC, GWP 1,430), with newer vehicles globally moving to R-1234yf (HFO, ultra-low GWP). R-134a also serves domestic refrigerators, chillers and pharmaceutical applications. Only one Indian manufacturer produces R-134a domestically — context that made the December 2025 anti-dumping duty on Chinese imports consequential for pricing.

Why R-134a fits the car

Mobile AC is a brutal duty cycle — vibration, heat soak, flexible hoses, frequent partial leaks — and R-134a's combination of moderate pressures, A1 non-flammability and universal serviceability made it the global answer after CFC-12's exit in the 1990s. The succession is regulation-led (EU MAC Directive and successors) and reaches India through global vehicle platforms. For workshops the rule is absolute: the two fluids never cross — separate machines, separate cylinders, nameplate discipline (mixing physics).

Platform awareness: as R-1234yf vehicles enter the parc through global platforms, the two-fluid workshop needs two dedicated service setups and an absolute no-crossover rule — the fluids and their equipment do not mix, and an R-1234yf port fitted to prevent exactly that mistake should be respected rather than adapted around.
