GWP table: every common refrigerant

A single reference table of global warming potential and ozone depletion potential for the refrigerants an Indian buyer is likely to meet, including the ones we do not stock. Figures are IPCC Fourth Assessment Report values, which is the basis used in the Kigali Amendment's Annex F and throughout this site.

Blend GWPs are mass-weighted averages of their components. AR5 values are shown only where a published figure is in general use for that fluid; a dash means we do not publish one rather than that none exists.

Why AR4 and not a newer assessment

GWP is not a fixed physical constant. It is a modelled ratio of the warming caused by one kilogram of a gas against one kilogram of CO₂ over a chosen horizon, normally 100 years, and the models are revised as atmospheric science improves.

The Kigali Amendment's Annex F lists specific GWP values for the controlled HFCs, and those are AR4 figures. Since Indian quota allocation follows Kigali, AR4 is the number that has legal and commercial effect here, whatever a later assessment says. That is why this site uses AR4 throughout.

Where AR5 differs the movement is modest: R-134a from 1,430 to 1,300, R-22 from 1,810 to 1,760, R-32 from 675 to 677. Enough to matter in a report, not enough to change a purchasing decision.

How blend GWP is calculated

Take the mass fraction of each component, multiply by that component's GWP, and add them. R-410A is half R-32 (675) and half R-125 (3,500), so its GWP is roughly (0.5 × 675) + (0.5 × 3,500) = about 2,088.

This is why R-125 matters so much in practice. It is a component rather than a product, it has a GWP of 3,500, and it appears in R-410A, R-404A, R-407C and R-448A. Blends get their climate impact disproportionately from their R-125 content, which is exactly what the newer low-GWP blends reduce.

What the numbers are used for

Quota. Kigali caps HFC consumption in CO₂-equivalent, so GWP decides how much physical product a quota buys. See the Kigali guide.

Emissions reporting. Refrigerant that leaks is a Scope 1 fugitive emission, and kilograms lost become tonnes of CO₂e by multiplying by GWP. See the leak calculator.

Equipment selection. Lower-GWP fluids are cheaper to hold quota against, which is the commercial argument behind the industry moving to R-32 and R-448A.

Quick answers

What is GWP?

Global warming potential: the warming caused by one kilogram of a gas relative to one kilogram of carbon dioxide, normally over 100 years.

Which refrigerant has the highest GWP?

Among those in common use, R-23 at about 14,800 and R-508B at about 13,396, both ultra-low-temperature fluids. Of the mainstream commercial gases, R-404A at about 3,922.

Why does this site use AR4 values?

Because the Kigali Amendment's Annex F lists AR4 figures, and Indian quota allocation follows Kigali. AR4 is the number with legal and commercial effect.

How is a blend's GWP worked out?

It is the mass-weighted average of its components. R-410A is half R-32 and half R-125, giving about 2,088.
