What refrigerant should I use for cold storage or commercial refrigeration?

R-404A has historically been the standard for commercial and low-temperature refrigeration and cold storage — a near-azeotropic HFC blend optimised for refrigeration duty. Its very high GWP (3,922) is now driving a shift to lower-GWP options, with R-407A / R-407F as the established retrofit-class alternatives. Large industrial cold stores in India, meanwhile, predominantly run ammonia.

Why R-404A owned the segment

Deep-freeze duty is a specific brief: strong capacity at −30 to −40°C evaporating temperatures, manageable discharge temperatures, and near-zero glide so evaporator control stays honest across supermarket racks and blast freezers. R-404A — an R-125/R-143a/R-134a near-azeotrope (glide <0.5°F; behaviour in the blends guide) — was formulated to that brief and became the default fluorocarbon of the 1990s–2010s cold chain.

The driver is quota arithmetic: at 3,922, a kilogram of R-404A draws ~5.8× the CO₂-equivalent of R-32 once the 2028 freeze starts binding — the strongest structural price pressure of any gas we stock (price mechanics).

The Indian cold-chain reality

Honest market note: India's big potato stores, fisheries and industrial freezer complexes are overwhelmingly ammonia plants — zero GWP, superb efficiency, and a toxicity class that keeps it in engineered facilities with trained crews. The fluorocarbon opportunity concentrates where ammonia doesn't fit: supermarket and QSR refrigeration, pharma cold rooms, dairy and ice-cream freezer fleets, smaller distribution hubs, reefer transport. Decision guide for owners

Existing R-404A plant: keep it tight and serviced — nothing requires retirement — but price the R-407A/F conversion while the equipment has life, because gas economics worsen on a schedule. New commercial systems: specify with the phase-down in view; every point of GWP is future operating cost. Either way: the fluid's 400-series behaviour makes charging and diagnostics discipline (liquid charge, dew/bubble points) part of the specification, not an afterthought.

Specifying a new commercial cold room in 2026: a decision path

The owner's question is rarely 'which refrigerant is best' in the abstract — it is 'what do I write into this tender'. A defensible path: Step 1 — size and setting decide the family. Large industrial volumes with engineered plant rooms and trained operators point to ammonia, full stop; commercial-scale rooms in occupied premises (retail, pharma, dairy distribution) stay fluorocarbon, where toxicity class and simplicity govern. Step 2 — within fluorocarbons, GWP is now a lifecycle cost line. Specify the duty (evaporating temperature, load profile), then prefer the lowest-GWP fluid that OEM equipment genuinely supports for that duty — in practice the R-407A/F class over new R-404A for low-temp, with R-404A reserved for like-for-like continuity where equipment dictates (the repricing logic is why this ordering pays). Step 3 — write the glide competence in. The 400-series alternatives demand liquid charging and dew/bubble discipline (the physics); a tender line requiring commissioning records with both saturation points quoted filters contractors cheaply. Step 4 — leak-tightness as specification, not hope: pressure-test records, joint standards, and an AMC clause on leak-rate accountability — because on a 3,900-GWP incumbent or a 2,000-GWP successor alike, the cheapest kilogram is the one never lost. Step 5 — document the refrigerant strategy in the asset register, so the 2030s owner inherits a plan rather than a mystery. Ten minutes of specification; fifteen years of consequences.
