Is R-410A being phased out in India?
Phase-down is not phase-out
These are two different regimes and confusing them leads to bad purchasing decisions.
Phase-out applies to ozone-depleting substances under the Montreal Protocol. R-22 is on that track: production and consumption step down to near zero on a fixed schedule, with a servicing tail to 2040. There is an end.
Phase-down applies to HFCs under the Kigali Amendment. India freezes HFC consumption in 2028 and steps down to 15% of baseline by 2047. It is a cap on the total, measured in CO₂-equivalent, not a ban on any particular fluid. Nothing in it says R-410A must stop.
Why R-410A still gets squeezed
Because the cap is measured by climate impact, not tonnage. R-410A has a GWP of about 2,088 on IPCC AR4. R-32 is about 675. Under a CO₂-equivalent quota, a kilogram of R-410A consumes roughly three times the allowance of a kilogram of R-32.
An importer with a fixed quota will therefore favour lower-GWP fluids, because the same allowance goes further. That is the mechanism by which a gas becomes scarce and expensive without ever being prohibited.
What manufacturers are doing
New split air conditioners in India predominantly ship on R-32, and the same shift is working through VRF and packaged equipment. R-410A remains in a very large installed base, roughly the equipment sold from the mid-2000s onward, and that base needs servicing for its remaining life.
Globally the successor is R-454B, an R-32 and R-1234yf blend with a GWP around 466. It has not become mainstream in India, so it is worth knowing about rather than planning around.
What an owner should actually do
Nothing urgent. Do not replace working R-410A equipment because of the phase-down; the arithmetic does not support it. Do fix leaks promptly, because a leaking system is where the cost of the phase-down actually lands. And when equipment reaches end of life, specify R-32 rather than R-410A, because you are choosing what you will be buying gas for over the next decade.
There is no legal reason to convert an existing R-410A system, and no straightforward way to do it either. The two gases are not interchangeable.

Is R-410A banned in India?
No. R-410A is fully legal to buy, use and service. It is an HFC under the Kigali phase-down, which caps total HFC consumption from 2028 rather than banning individual gases.
When will R-410A stop being available?
There is no end date. Availability tightens gradually because Kigali quota is allocated by CO2-equivalent and R-410A has a higher GWP than the alternatives, so importers favour lower-GWP fluids.
Should I replace my R-410A air conditioner?
Not because of the phase-down. Fix leaks promptly, and specify R-32 when the equipment reaches end of life. There is no legal requirement to convert.
Can I convert an R-410A system to R-32?
No. They run at different pressures, R-32 is A2L mildly flammable, and the equipment is designed around one or the other.
