Is R-404A being phased out in India?

Not banned, but first in line to get expensive. R-404A and R-507A have the highest GWPs in common commercial use, around 3,922 for R-404A on IPCC AR4. The Kigali phase-down allocates quota by CO₂-equivalent, so every kilogram of R-404A consumes about three times the allowance of a kilogram of R-448A. That arithmetic, not a prohibition, is what pushes it out.

The quota arithmetic

This is worth doing explicitly, because it explains everything else on this page.

Under Kigali, a country's HFC consumption is capped in tonnes of CO₂-equivalent, which is physical tonnes multiplied by GWP. An importer holding a fixed CO₂e allowance can bring in roughly three kilograms of R-448A (GWP about 1,387) for every one kilogram of R-404A (about 3,922).

Given the choice, importers will fill the allowance with the fluid that yields more sellable product. R-404A does not get banned. It gets outbid for quota, which reaches the buyer as price and availability.

What is replacing it

R-448A and R-449A are the mainstream lower-GWP replacements for both new plant and retrofits, at roughly a third of R-404A's GWP. R-452A is used where a smaller capacity and discharge-temperature shift is wanted, particularly in transport refrigeration.

For low-temperature work where the equipment can accommodate it, R-407A and R-407F are also established routes.

None of these is a drop-in. All are zeotropic with more glide than R-404A, all need POE oil, and most installations need the expansion valve adjusted or replaced. Discharge temperatures run higher, which is the thing that bites on low-temperature packs. The retrofit guide covers the trade-offs.

R-507A

R-507A is an azeotropic blend of R-125 and R-143a with a GWP slightly above R-404A's. It was used where the absence of glide was worth having. It sits in exactly the same position under the phase-down, for the same reason, and the same replacements apply.

What an operator should do

Fix leaks first. On a supermarket rack or a cold store, leak rate is the dominant cost, and it is the one thing entirely within your control. A system losing charge annually will feel the phase-down long before a tight one does.

Convert at refurbishment rather than as a standalone project, because the oil change and valve work are much cheaper when the system is already open. Specify a lower-GWP fluid on all new plant.

And do not panic-buy. R-404A remains available and lawful, and we continue to supply it.

Quick answers

Is R-404A banned in India?

No. It is legal to buy, use and service. It phases down by quota under Kigali, and because quota is counted in CO2-equivalent, high-GWP fluids tighten first.

What is replacing R-404A?

R-448A and R-449A are the mainstream lower-GWP routes, with R-452A where a smaller capacity shift is wanted. R-407A and R-407F are also used at low temperature.

Is R-448A a drop-in for R-404A?
