What can replace R-404A in an existing system?

The established retrofit routes from R-404A are R-448A, R-449A and R-452A, with R-407A and R-407F used in some refrigeration duty. All run on POE oil, all are zeotropic, and none is a drop-in — expect to recover, change the drier, verify the expansion device and recharge by weight.

Why anyone retrofits away from R-404A

R-404A works. The reason to move off it is not performance but its global warming potential of 3,922 on the AR4 basis — the highest of the gases in common Indian use, and roughly double R-410A.

Under the Kigali Amendment India freezes HFC consumption at 2024 levels with reductions from 2028. Phase-downs work on a CO2-equivalent basis, which means high-GWP gases consume disproportionate quota and feel the squeeze first. Markets that have already been through this saw R-404A become the awkward one to source long before the gases around it did.

To be clear about what this is not: your installed R-404A plant is legal, gas remains available, and there is no requirement to convert anything. This is a planning question, not a compliance one.

The routes, and what each suits

The split in practice: R-452A went into transport because it tracks R-404A's pressures closely enough that vehicle-mounted equipment did not need redesigning. R-448A and R-449A went into stationary commercial refrigeration, where a somewhat larger behavioural change is tolerable in exchange for a bigger GWP reduction. What a retrofit actually involves

“Drop-in” is a word the trade should have retired years ago. These are the steps a real conversion needs.

  • Recover the existing charge properly — not vent it. Record the quantity recovered
  • Change the oil to POE if the system is not already on it, flushing toward a low residual of the old lubricant
  • Replace the filter-drier with one rated for the new refrigerant and oil
  • Check the expansion device. A thermostatic valve charged for R-404A may need a different power element; some conversions need the valve resized
  • Evacuate to a deep vacuum and hold it — POE is hygroscopic, so residual moisture is a bigger problem than it was on the old system. Evacuation and moisture
  • Charge as a liquid, by weight, to the recalculated charge — not to a gauge reading carried over from the old gas
  • Re-label the system and record the change. The next technician has to know what is in it

Expect some capacity and discharge-temperature difference. Verify superheat and subcooling against the new refrigerant's own data, reading superheat from dew point and subcooling from bubble point because these are glide blends. Glide explained.

When not to retrofit

Three situations where converting is the wrong call:

The plant is near end of life. A conversion costs labour, oil, a drier and possibly valve work. On a system with a couple of seasons left, replacing the equipment with something designed for a modern refrigerant is the better spend.

Nobody will maintain the records. A converted system that is not re-labelled becomes a trap: the next technician tops it up with R-404A, and now you have an undocumented mixture that cannot be diagnosed or lawfully recovered as either gas.

The leak has not been found. Converting a leaking system just means losing a different gas. Fix the leak first — and on a system that has needed repeated top-ups, that is the whole job. Leak detection methods.

Quick answers

Is R-448A or R-449A a drop-in for R-404A?

No. Both are credible retrofit routes but require recovery of the old charge, POE oil, a new filter-drier, verification or replacement of the expansion device, deep evacuation and recharging by weight as a liquid.

What replaces R-404A in transport refrigeration?

R-452A is the usual route, because its pressures and capacity track R-404A closely enough that transport units did not need redesigning around it.

Do I have to convert my existing R-404A system?

No. Installed equipment remains legal and servicing gas remains available. The reason to plan a conversion is that R-404A has the highest GWP in common use, so it is the most exposed to future phase-down pressure on cost and supply.
