R-404A dominates the low-temperature end for a straightforward engineering reason: it was formulated for it, and it holds capacity at evaporating temperatures where other blends fall away. Larger bulk plants run on ammonia and sit outside our supply.
The R-404A question nobody in the sector enjoys
R-404A has a global warming potential of 3,922 on the AR4 basis — the highest of the gases in common Indian use, and roughly six times R-32. Under the Kigali Amendment India freezes HFC consumption at 2024 levels with reductions beginning in 2028, and when a phase-down starts squeezing, the highest-GWP gases feel it first.
What that does not mean is that your existing plant is in trouble. Installed equipment stays legal, and servicing supply continues. What it does mean is that if you are specifying a new low-temperature system, R-404A is the option most exposed to future cost and availability pressure, and that is worth weighing at the design stage rather than discovering later.
Internationally the retrofit routes away from R-404A are established — R-448A, R-449A and R-452A among them — though they are not drop-ins and generally require POE oil and sometimes expansion-valve changes. The R-404A retrofit routes are set out here.
Why glide matters more in this sector
R-404A, R-407C and the newer replacement blends are zeotropic: their components boil at slightly different temperatures, so the mixture has temperature glide and its composition can shift if it leaks or is charged carelessly.
Two practical rules follow, and they get broken constantly in food plant:
- Charge blends as a liquid, from an inverted cylinder or through a metering device. Vapour-charging draws off the lighter components first and leaves the cylinder — and the system — with the wrong mixture
- After a significant leak, recover and recharge to full weight. Topping up a blend that has already fractionated compounds the error
The symptom of getting this wrong is a system that never quite reaches temperature and a technician chasing a fault that is actually a composition problem. Blends and glide explained.
Supply that suits a plant that cannot stop
A dairy chilling centre or an ice plant does not have a maintenance window in any meaningful sense — the milk arrives, the ice is on order. Telangana's dairy network, poultry belt and seed-processing industry make this a substantial local segment, and it behaves differently from comfort cooling: smaller orders, more urgency, and repeat servicing on plant that runs hard.

Which refrigerant is used in bulk milk coolers?
Most commonly R-404A, with R-134a in some units and R-22 in older equipment still in service. The choice follows the evaporating temperature the cooler is designed around.
Why must R-404A be charged as a liquid?
